Thoughts on Adobe Generative AI
I have been using Photoshop's Generative AI beta since its launch this summer. Throughout my usage, I've noticed a few things and have some thoughts to share.
Specific vs. Nonspecific: For instance, when asking the AI to match a shoulder on a clipped photo of a person, it may provide an abstract version instead. Or when being very specific, like changing eye color, it might create cross-eyes.
Efficiency vs. Time Consumption: I've learned that certain edits, such as color changes, are faster when done manually. Light retouching also remains quicker when handled by myself. However, larger edits, like removing a truck from a background, can be expedited with generative AI.
Time Saver or Job Replacer: I maintain my belief, as I did earlier this summer, that AI is a tool that enhances productivity and, at this point, replaces very few creative jobs. However, it's worth noting that using AI in place of genuine design skills can result in noticeable differences.
Using this tool has also led me to consider tools like MidJourney or ChatGPT, both of which I believe can be incredibly useful. However, I've noticed instances of art or ebooks being sold that are clearly AI-generated. This raises a gray area that is currently being discussed. But as you’ll see from the cover art, which is a Photoshop prompt I created, I don’t think most AI art is even close to that of our colleagues.
As a tool or editor, I think AI is acceptable. But when it takes on the role of generating creativity and poses copyright issues, that's where it crosses the line.
I want to emphasize that this opinion is my own, but I know it's a sentiment shared by many.
